Despite high dropout rates within the profession, there has been little reported in the literature of stress concerning speech therapists. A questionnaire/survey was carried out of speech therapists within one regional health authority, examining demographic data, experience of stress, happiness in job, and factors producing strees. Clear evidence was Obtained that UK speech therapists report high levels of stress. Although large numbers were happy in their job, a significant number wished to leave. There were few correlations between reported stress and other factors. There was some indication of home‐work interaction and some differences between full‐time and part‐time staff. More obhisticated measures of stress utilizing grid techniques are recommended.
